Nuwara Eliya, Sri Lanka, Step into the City of Lights – Little England welcomes you

Set in an altitude of close to 2000 meters, Nuwara Eliya means 'table land' ' or city on the plain. It also is known as Little England or 'City of Lights'. An enchanting little town that still fiercely keeps up the traditions set by old colonial tea planters and governors, Nuwara Eliya is a popular holiday destination for not only the curious foreign traveller but also the locals seeking to get away from the heat and bustle of the rest of the island.

Although the town itself has given way somewhat to modernization, certain buildings like the post office and other such buildings still retain its colonial style. In the immediate vicinity of the town, even the houses maintain the Old English look and truly give you the feeling of being in a miniature England.

April 1st formerly kick starts the season in Nuwara Eliya in grand ceremonious style and continues with events such as the motor racing and horse racing events and ends with the all famous Governors Cup, Golf Tournament and flower shows.

Victoria Park is a good location for all the keen bird watching enthusiasts as well as Gregory's Lake for those who would enjoy boating. Nuwara Eliya, given its location, is a good starting point to visit Piduruthalagala ' Sri lanka's highest mountain, Horton Plains ' the highest plateau in Sri Lanka with wonderful wildlife, flora and fauna- and many waterfalls such as Devon Falls Laksapana Falls, and Ramboda Falls, all of which are in close proximity to Nuwara Eliya.
